J. Ashley Cooper

J. Ashley Cooper
is an attorney with Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart,
P.C. He also serves as the South Carolina Senior Advisor for
Senator Chris Dodd for President. Ashley is an active community
member and is involved with multiple service groups and organizations
including the Medical University of South Carolina Children’s
Hospital South Carolina Arts Foundation. Ashley is an involved
Board Member with Communities In Schools of South Carolina,
Inc. and is very appreciated for his community involvement
and willingness to help the South Carolina CIS network continue
to grow.

Patricia Stone Motes
Vice-Chair |
Patricia Stone Motes (BS,
South Carolina State; PhD, University of South Carolina)
is a research professor in the Institute on Family and Neighborhood
Life, Clemson University. She coordinates and supervises
the mental health programs within Strong Communities, a
comprehensive community-wide initiative designed to prevent
child abuse and neglect by building systems of care for
families of young children. Dr. Motes also assists Building
Dreams, a mentoring program for children who have an incarcerated
parent. Pursuant to a grant program in the Institute for
Partnerships to Eliminate Health Disparities, Arnold School
of Public Health at the University of South Carolina, she
works with a university-community collaborative to eliminate
health disparities. A clinical-community psychologist, Dr.
Motes was formerly associate director and director of student
affairs in the Institute for Families in Society at the
USC where she also worked on range of programmatic and research
initiatives including the overrepresentation of minority
youth in the juvenile justice system, community collaboratives
supporting the prevention of youth violence, and systems
of care to promote positive mental health outcomes for children,
youth, and their families. Dr. Motes began her post-doctoral
career at South Carolina State, where she taught in the
Department of Psychology and Sociology. Her publications
include a co-edited book, collaborating with Community-Based
Organizations Through Consultation and Technical Assistance
(Columbia University Press).

Daryl Brewer
Treasurer |
Daryl R. Brewer is a Professor
of Business Management at Benedict College in Columbia S.C.
As an active member of the community, he not only volunteers
his time at the Greater Irmo Chamber of Commerce, but he also
serves as a board of director at Babcock Center Incorporated.
He believes that the greatest achievement that anyone can
accomplish in life is to serve others and give back to the
community. Daryl is a committed board member and works hard
to advance the goals of Communities In Schools of South Carolina,
Inc. so that the organization can reach its full potential
of helping others in need. |

Calvin W. Jackson
Immediate Past Chair
|
Calvin W. Jackson currently
serves as the Chief Operating Officer for Administration
at the Bible Way Church of Atlas Road of Columbia, South
Carolina. Mr. Jackson is the immediate past Chair of the
Board of Directors for Communities In Schools of South Carolina,
Inc. and serves as the Chair of the Board of Directors for
the South Carolina Afterschool Alliance. He has recently
accepted the position of Chair of the South Carolina Oral
Health Advisory Board. He is also Chair of the External
Advisory Board of the College of Health, Education, and
Human Development at Clemson University.
Mr. Jackson earned his Bachelor’s Degree
in Journalism from the University of South Carolina in 1977.
He earned a Master’s Degree in Public Administration/Public
Policy from the University of South Carolina/University
of Charleston.
Mr. Jackson has co-authored two books: Powerful
Allies Afterschool Programs, Service-Learning and Community
Education and Small High Schools That Flourish: Rural Contact,
Case Studies and Resources
